Once small change- No Poo

No, that's not an alternative to swearing... lol... it's an alternative way of making sure that even our cleaning and body products are as natural as the food we eat! The NO StamPOO idea is one that I've heard of for some time now but figured that with my long, oily prone hair, it would never work. I was reading about it over at The Artful Parent and finally decided "What do I have to lose?"

I must say, I didn't go into this experiment with high hopes, I honestly didn't think it was going to work... BOY WAS I WRONG! There, I said it, I was wrong. Mark it on the calender 'cause it's not likely to happen again anytime soon! lol :)

After only one washing, I felt like my hair had lost a few pounds! Really, it felt so much lighter that I couldn't wait to try it again the next day! Now if only I could shed a few pounds elsewhere that easily.... that would be a whole other blog entry! lol No really, my hair felt so much lighter and had so much more bounce to it that I had to chuckle to myself. After years of being sold the idea of "You need product to get lift" I discovered the real secret in a little bit of baking soda and vinegar...For the first time in my adult life, I felt like my hair was my friend again. It was a good feeling!

Now with it being nearly 5 weeks later, I am happy to report that my hair and I are still not only friends but the best of buddies! I have been so happy with the results that I started using the baking soda rinse on my girls' hair too. I have yet to try the vinegar on them but that's only because I know they will react to the smell and it's just not worth the fight. With that being said, I do still have to use detangler on their hair but am happy to say, that even with my long hair... that vinegar is magic and I have no issues with tangles! As for the smell you may ask? I just add a few drops of orange oil to my water and baking soda mix and I pretty much only smell the vinegar while I am pouring it on in the shower. I get almost daily compliments from my dear hubby as to how yummy I smell so I don't think the vinegar smell is an issue! ;)

I have been raised to believe int he power of good ol' apple cider vinegar and have discovered (thanks to a few friends) the joy and ease of using baking soda for just about everything. Why I didn't think this No-poo idea would work is beyond me and for once I am happy to be proven wrong!!

So please... stop buying shampoo that is ultimately going to be bad for your health, avoid spending way too much for the healthier alternatives and just go raid the pantry... you'll be glad you did!!

If you'd like to know the "why" behind moment, go read more about why you should go Shampoo free!

Don't believe me? Let HipMountinMama tell you all about it! You really should give it a try! :)

Oh, I remember why I stopped doing this method; I kept getting "salt" deposits on my scalp after several days. I think from the baking soda.
This is b/c I don't wash my hair every time I shower - I generally only wash my hair 1x a week b/c otherwise it gets so dry and weird. lol.
Altho' maybe the coconut stuff and the no 'poo thing will work better together for me. Will report back!
I think I have the opposite prob than you have. lol

I've decided to give no Poo a try! My hairdresser daughter will totally NOT agree! But proof is in the doing.... so maybe I'll convince her, who knows.
Thanks for entering my Green Books giveaway and encouraging me to come check out No Poo. I plan on doing a post about it myself and linking back here :)
I am now following you too!

I followed you over from One Small Change :)

I've been No 'Poo for a little over 6 months now. I have long, oily prone hair myself and was wary of trying... so much so that the vinegar sat in my bathroom for months before I ran out of shampoo one day and said what the heck! I absolutely love it, too :) I've got super hard water, so it took a little trial and error before I found what worked. I was getting what Robin called "salt" on my scalp, too from the minerals. I started using plain white vinegar and that helped. The thing that made the biggest difference, though, was the brand of baking soda I was using. Weird, but when I switched to Bob's Red Mill my hair and scalp got sooooo much better. I think it's because BRM baking soda seems to have smaller particles (or whatever you should refer to it as!) and it's just smoother in texture. Maybe it dissolves into the water better?? It also seemed to make my hair smoother than before, so the tangles aren't bad to deal with now. I used to have dandruff like mad, too. It would be evident even before my hair dried!! No more, and I only wash my hair about twice a week with no oilies either :) Oh, and my hair feels like it's getting thicker. Has yours seemed to thicken up, too?

Thanks for sharing!!
