The Song Remembers When Challenge- I've got my mind set on you

I think I was 7 or 8 years old when this song came out, I didn't know anything about the Beatles I just knew that there was a guy named George Harrison with a really cool music video called "I Got My Mind Set on You"...actually two videos. I can remember watching the video every chance I got when it played on MTV, you know, when MTV was good and actually played music videos! lol I'll post the one but haven't been able to find the other,( yeah! I found it!) which of course is the one I remember and the video that plays thru my mind while I'm walking thru a store and this song comes on the radio! I just can't help but smile when I hear it...I have loved George Harrison (and later came to love the Beatles too) ever since!

The Song remembers When challenge & Lavender Festival

This weekend we headed out to explore more of our area and ended up in Oklahoma at Lavender Valley Acres' 6th annual lavender festival!






I so miss or lavender plant at the old house! I can't wait to plant some in our new home!







We enjoyed the vendors and I even got a new pair of earrings!









It was all I could do not to buy a new plant!







The girls loved watching the belly dancers! Their dancing was beautiful!

It was SO hot...and we were all thirsty! lol

the gardens were beautiful and so full of flowers and veggies!

The details on this bird are amazing! The girls ooo and ahhhed until we had to finaly pull them away! lol

It's funny that we'd be reading a new fairy book this week about a lavender fairy getting ready for the mid summers ball...and she was singing this song! I had forgotten about this song, haven't probably heard it since I was little....so glad to have a new song to sing with the girls! Now I need to find the guitar chords! Don't you just love Burl Ives?

The Song remembers When-This Land is Your Land

As we all think about our plans for the upcoming 4th of July holiday weekend, it's hard not to think about the amazing patriotic songs we have in our history too...My girls have been learning this song and it brings such a smile to my face when I hear their little voices singing it. I don't know if its possible for them to fully understand how lucky we are to live in the country we do but I hope that this song stirs up the same kind of pride in our country and our military that it always has for me....Growing up, I didn't take part in a lot of patriotic songs, due to religious beliefs at the time, and I can remember asking if this song was ok to sing because we sang it in music class and I always loved it. I remember being asked why I would want to sing it and I just remember thinking that it made me proud to be an American and that the song just made me feel good. I know that pride isn't always a good thing, but I think the word pride can sometimes be interchangeable with the word "thankful"...and I am so thankful to have seen the diamond desserts and the wheat fields waving...and that my children can someday see the beauty of the redwoods and all the other amazing things this land has to offer... This land was made for you and me...

I have be so lucky to have seen Arlo (Woody Guthrie's son) a number of times and could listen to him sing forever...folk music speaks to the soul like non other!

The Song Remembers When- Mr Bojangles

I was talking to my MIL today about names for a boy dog (she just got a puppy) and I mentioned Hobo would be cute. She said something about Bojangles and it was all I could do to get to the computer to look up the song! I used to love this song as a kid and it was such a kick to hear it again!

What is a favorite song from your childhood?

I can remember the day I got one of my favorite teddy bears, there were lines of them at the store but mine was the cutest (they were all the same!)...and Mr Bojangles was the perfect name! Can't you just see a little ball of fluffy puppy named that too!? Ahh...someday....

As I mentioned before, each of my girls have a song that is "theirs"...and today it's J turn to share her favorite song! I remember the first time I heard this song, I was unpacking my bedroom in TX and listening to a sneak peak of the newest album from Rascal Flatts online...no I couldn't wait for the cd to come out! lol

J wasn't quite three when she fell in love with this song, I can still hear that little voice muttling thru all those fast lyrics! lol It was hilarious! She still loves this song, only now she actually gets the words right! ha!

The Song Remembers When Challenge -"Stand"

On Facebook this morning, my friend Tricia posted this question..You're sitting in a bar. A song comes on and suddenly you think of me. What song is playing? Re-paste this in your status and see how many crazy songs you get back! While she got some funny replies, like Baracuda and Honky Tonk Woman...I always think of her when I hear this song....

We both lived in Alaska together, on the same street actually and we were such a huge part of each others daily lives....this cd came out the day (or maybe it was the day after) she left to move back down to the lower 48. I had dreaded that day for months and didn't know how I was going to get used to her and her family being gone...for some reason this song gave me comfort that we would both be ok and that all the baggage that came with our friendship was only going to make us stronger....It's funny how a song that was probably meant for a whole other meaning can make so much sense and give us comfort thru a very tough day...

If you have ever ridden in the truck with us, or spent very much time with us at all, you know that my girls like to jam in the truck while we are going down the road...they each have their favorites (I'll post J's another day) and will proceed to sing them word for word (or pretty close!) at the top of their lungs!

Well, this just happens to be R's favorite and she will ask to here it over and over and over and over and over again!

We had the best day today...once again it was a simple day out with friends, nothing flashy but we had such an amzing time. On the way home this song came on the radio and we jammed out to it on the way home. I hope the girls remember it as warmly as I do...and I'm not talking about Texas weather! lol

We took a ride to Young's Orchard in Charlie to pick peaches!

And then we stopped at some farm stands along the road for some of nature's goodness...great for dinner!

The Song Remembers When Challenge- Indescribable

This week, my husband and I are volunteering at VBS (vacation Bible school) and I have been so moved by the lessons the children have been learning and the joy that I have witnessed on their faces. The lesson yesterday was based on Psalm 139:14 " I will praise You because I have been remarkably and wonderfully made. Your works are wonderful and I know this very well." I know the kids don't grasp how amazing that is (I know I can't fathom it completely as an adult!) and that some of the kids at VBS don't come from homes that remind them just how amazing they are...that's why I'm so glad they have a place like VBS that they can learn about God and His love for them...

I am working in the craft room (go figure huh??) and I have so enjoyed listening to the kids talking to each other and hearing their ideas about things. I know VBS is supposed to be for the kids, but I am learning alot too! There are a few kids that I would love to just take home with me...they are all so special!

Everytime I hear the kids reading the memory verse from last night (Psalm 139:14), I think about this song...

...and when I hear this song, I think about our church in Alaska and then about our trip down the Alcan. We were driving thru a horrendous rain storm in Colorado, so bad that we couldn't see the road and I was getting scared...this song was playing on cd...It has given me comfort ever since and is one of our families favorite songs...I hope you like it too!

The Song Remembers When Challenge- I Love A Rainy Night

For anyone actually reading these song posts, I'm sorry that this one is late! We had quite the storm last night and we lost internet connection! I had planned on writing about another song but this one came to mind so I thought I'd go with it instead! I found this song playing in my head, trying to find comfort in a much loved song, while the storm raged outside our trailer.... I have always loved rainy days, they tend to make me feel creative and want to break out some crayons and a good coloring book. I can even remember coloring on the floor of my grandparents' living room on a rainy day back in 1986 when the Challenger exploded....

Last night, however, was not the most enjoyable rain storm I've ever experienced. As far as storms go, it wasn't that bad. Sitting in a metal trailer with thunder and lightening all around and the intense noise from the rain was not the comfortable experience I am used to and the girls were up well passed midnight trying to ignore the flashing of the storm thru the windows....

I must say tho, remembering this song did help get me to sleep...I was only two when it came out so I can pretty much say it's been one of my favorite sons for almost my entire life! Its an oldie but a goodie!

The song Remembers When Challenge- Love Song (Everwood)

Now, I know this song isn't really a main stream version of this song but it is one of my all time favorite songs in life and I get to hear it every night when I am tucking my girls into bed.

The moment that the guitar starts to play I am transported to a place farther north than most have ever traveled, into the land of the Yukon Territory....for me it's just a taste, or a tease really, of what's to come if you continue following the Alcan north and cross into Alaska (or Eden as I think of it).

When we left our home of Alaska, I can only really remember feeling numb...it was because it hurt so bad to leave that I really think God just made us numb to it so we could somehow get thru it and move on. I had hoped to post pictures of the trip back down to the lower 48 from that trip and I realized there were very little! I can remember just staring out the window at the amazing views, the blue water rivers standing out the most and in my memory these songs were playing...that's because that was the summer that we discovered the show Everwood and I watched it in the truck during the day and it was the only thing that gave me any bit of joy during the four days we pushed to get back down thru Canada and to just have that part of the journey over and out of the way...

It has become a nightly ritual that my girls listen to the soundtrack from Everwood as they are going to sleep and I still find such comfort in hearing these songs. If you have never seen the show, I erge you to bought it or rent it on Netflix, it was one of the best shows to ever grave our tv and we miss it terribly!!! There are still days that I just need my Everwood "fix" and I have to hear these songs...

Bummer

Did I do something wrong? Did I make it too hard? Is life just too busy with summer or is it just not interesting enough? I am so bummed that I haven't gotten anyone else to do this challenge too! I thought it would be fun to see other people's feelings about songs and how music is such a big part of everyone lives.... Dixie Chicks - Cowboy Take Me Away

Do you have a song that reminds you of anyone in particular? Now, due to past events, this group is far from being my favorite (and I thought it was great when a radio dj started to play this song at an air show and then cut it off the air...with a flightline of people cheering) however, I still love the music this group has put out and it's still a big part of my growing up memories.

This particular song reminds me of a guy I was dating at the time it came out....it was one of those relationships that made me a better person and I felt like I could do anything...It takes me back to driving home from work on country roads just so I could get home and ready to see him...It was the first time I thought a guy could really be "the one" not just puppy love...

It's funny how things change with you tho, because now when I hear this song I still have a fleeting thought of that guy (who I'm still good friends with) but now I also think of my husband and how he swept me off my feet and how he set me free and took me away to an amazing life of adventure!

The Song Remembers When Challenge- Who Says You Can't Go Home

Ok, I figured if I was going to share our "Texas Song" and I've already told you the song I consider to be our "Washington song" then of course I have to tell you about our "Alaska song"!

This song came out when we were getting ready to move out of Alaska on our way to Texas...there was just something about it that always put a smile on my face and gave me some strange sort of comfort knowing that I could always go home. The song says "I've spent twenty years tryin' to get out of this place, I was lookin' for something I couldn't replace, I was runnin away from the only thing that I've ever know" and while I wasn't really trying to leave the only "place" I'd ever know, I had left behind a life in Missouri, a few years before,that I just didn't feel like I fit into, and I was trying to find a place that I couldn't replace, because in all my travels I'd never found somewhere I really wanted to stay...no place ever felt like I was truly home.

" I hijacked a rainbow and crashed into a pot of gold" discribes Alaska to a tee! I know that life is a journey and that every second of every day has shaped me in one way or another so the line"There isn't one of these lines I would erase" hits home that I have no regrets on these "millions of miles of memories on that road"

"Been all around the world and as a matter of fact, there's only one place left I want to go...Who says you can't go home" Home to me is Alaska, and someday I will get to go home but until then, I'll just keep playin this song...

The Song Remembers When Challenge-IF YOU'RE GOING THROUGH HELL [OFFICIAL VIDEO]

I still think it's so fitting that this is the song that was playing as we rounded the loop leading up to our house in Texas the day we closed on it...we were so glad to be getting settled but still so numb to the fact that this was "home" for now...we joked that this song was perfect for that day and the four following years we'd have to spend here! lol This song will forever in my mind be our "Texas song"

The Song Remembers When Challenge-In the wee small hours of the morning

This particular songs is one that I regularly hear playing in the back of my mind rather than on the radio....It's on mornings like this one, when the house/trailer is quiet and dark, the coffee is hot and the girls are still sleeping...it's such a brief chance to enjoy the day slowly and to let my mind wonder and often times I think of this song...Of course it comes from one of my all time favorite movies too so that's always nice! :)

The Song Remembers When Challenge- Bohemian Rhapsody

I must have been around 12 or thirteen, I was babysitting (the kids were sleeping) and watching MTV when this video came on. Wayne's World had just come out and this song was really big. I remember thinking that Queen was the coolest "new" band and loved the song so much that I couldn't wait to tell my dad about the video because I thought he would like it too... I was so bummed to find out that the group was no longer together and not all still living...I have been a Queen fan ever since!

My girls probably thought was nuts jamming out to this song on the radio today on our way to park day! lol And it just kinda lost something when I had to turn the volume down at a few parts I didn't want the girls to hear... But none the less, when this song came on I was taken back to sitting in the livingroom of the Allen's house, discovering a great "new" band! lol

The Song Remembers When Challenge- Mayberry

When this song came on the radio today, I had flashbacks to the days of "cruising the strip" of my hometown...we'd drive down mainstreet to Harold's grocery store where we would turn around in the parking lot and go back down mainstreet and head out of town where we would drive thru Sonic and the do it all over again! lol Why this felt cool I don't know but it did, and it was even more fun when you'd run into a friend and end out hanging out at the four way....yeah...we were cool.....not!!






But that's what you do for fun in a small town. You invent it and hope no one sees you doing it or they'll tell your mom at the grocery store the next day! ha!








Being a military brat, I moved around quite a bit but I was lucky enough to end up in one place long enough to go to high school and part of college before moving on again. I spent almost 8 years in a small town in Missouri where there were still places to tie up a horse outside the grocery store for the many Amish families in the area and there was only one blinking stoplight at the center of town. I graduated from high school with a class of 58 and that was one of the biggest classes to have graduated from that school...











We were lucky enough to get to visit there for a day while on our travel to PA a few weeks ago...I know these pictures are the best, and please excuse the dead bugs on the windshield, but here's a view of my hometown....













Everytime I here this song, I imagine I am driving down main street, on my way to DQ where Lynn would greet me with a smile and friends would honk the horn while they cruise on by into Harold's supermarket. It has since been renamed but will always be Harold's to me...Because in a small town, nothing changes it just gets older and smaller than we remember....

The Song Remembers When Challenge-Gypsy

Considering our current living situation, this song seems so fitting for our life right now! lol My hubby thinks I'm crazy for my "place songs".... I have an Alaska song, our Texas song (will share them another day) etc...different periods in my life have songs that come to mind...If there were to be a movie of my life, these songs would surely have to be playing in the backround and most definately be on the sound track....

When this song was on American Idol, it really hit a chord with me and somehow makes me feel better about our life this summer...being carefree and very gypsy like!
